The Toddler Atelier

Our Toddler Atelier

Toddlers go through intense periods during which their behaviours seem to challenge everything! But we believe that toddlers get a bad rap, and one that does not do them justice. When toddlers are offered a very special place where everything takes into account their needs and abilities, they are terrific. Let us tell you a little more about our Toddler Atelier.

For confident little walkers

Sometime between the ages of 2 1/2 to 3 years of age, your child’s language skills and self-expression will develop rapidly; he will express a growing confidence in independence and a keen interest in broader concepts; he will want to know what lies ahead, outside of the Toddler Atelier. At this point, he is ready to transition to the Primary Classroom. But before that, he will learn so much!

Our Toddler Atelier has been purposefully created for the confident little walker up to the age of three years. All children develop at their own pace, so we don’t enroll children based on their age; instead we look at the development stage the child is (or likely will be) at the moment of enrollment.

Help Me to Do It Myself

Your child has a natural drive to be independent which we encourage by creating an environment where everything is just the right size for her to do things on her own. It is a world scaled down to your child’s size. Child-sized tools that fit her tiny hands allow her to prepare a snack and serve it to friends. A miniature broom empowers her to clean up on her own. She is taught the skills of self-care and toilet learning. Your child learns a set of concrete life skills and self-confidence – but, more importantly, develops the belief that she can choose to make a genuine impact on her world.

First friends

Making first friends and learning how to function within a community is a life-shaping experience for your child. Your child will become part of a close-knit, caring community of toddlers in our bright and sunny Toddler Atelier. When children work, learn and grow together in a beautiful environment under the guidance of well-trained and loving guides, they learn much more than any of them could learn alone. In our Toddler Atelier we provide a structured environment for your little one to be able to learn how to interact with others in a safe environment and in an age-appropriate way. Your child emerges with strong friendships that will continue as she moves through the rest of the programs at The Montessori School.

Practice Makes Permanent

Often, children who don’t do things for themselves simply don’t know how or haven’t been given the chance. We take a different approach – by observing your child closely, providing just the right lesson when he is ready and then allowing him to practice again and again (and again!) until he masters it. Mistakes are viewed as learning opportunities in an atmosphere of patience, trust and respect.

Absorbing Language; all three of them!

We surround your child with rich and stimulating conversation to support this once-in-a-lifetime period of rapid language development. Your child, trying to blow bubbles, might be encouraged with “Blow! Can you make the air move just like the wind?” Your child’s mind effortlessly absorbs the new vocabulary, which plants the seeds for reading, writing and self-expression in the future. And the unique feature of our Toddler Atelier is that your child will learn not one, but three languages. English, Spanish and Mandarin are among the most widely spoken languages in the world. Your child will end up speaking these languages as her native tongue, allowing her to communicate with virtually everyone on the planet. To us, that’s priceless.

A beautiful place for learning

Where so many early childhood programs are chaotic and overwhelming, parents often notice that our toddlers are exuberant as they go about so many tasks with high levels of independence! The way we set up our activities and present them to each child, gives them motives for activity that helps them refine and bring their movements under their control. You will notice that an engaged toddler is capable of intense concentration and control of movement, guided by his intelligence and driven by his need for mastery. In this way, seeds of learning are planted every day in this classroom and beyond!

To be a toddler is to be curious. There are so many things to see, touch, hear, feel and do in the classroom! Beautiful materials that stimulate the senses are presented on low shelves to pique your child’s curiosity. She is encouraged to move freely around the classroom, to choose activities and explore her own interests.

When your child is ready for the Primary Classroom your child’s guide will contact you and discuss the next steps.
